If you find yourself genuinely questioning whether you’re operating in Bad Faith, chances are you’re already in the realm of Good Faith lol It’s important to note that most of us naturally strive towards Good Faith, and so it’s not as much about distinguishing Good Faith from Bad Faith but rather focusing on the appropriate level of interaction: cosmic, ego, or interpersonal. Take a scientist with cosmic Good Faith who trusts in the universe’s inherent consistency. Yet, they might struggle with interpersonal Good Faith, seeing themselves as the rational, ‘good’ party and religious people as misguided or ‘bad’. This interpersonal Bad Faith could lead to isolation, as their dismissiveness may push others away. Over time, such isolation could trigger an existential crisis when they realize no one wants to be around their dismissiveness. On the other side, consider a deeply religious person. They might exhibit interpersonal Good Faith, being charitable within their immediate community, but harbor cosmic Bad Faith if they believe in two separate universal laws - one governed by God, the other by the devil. This worldview could lead them to label strangers or unfamiliar individuals as influenced by the devil, particularly during times of stress or confrontation. This Bad Faith in the cosmic realm can, therefore, spill over into their interpersonal interactions, limiting their capacity for understanding and empathy. In both cases, the challenge is not just distinguishing between Good and Bad Faith, but understanding and managing the level at which these principles are operating. Remember that Good Faith on all levels - cosmic, ego, and interpersonal - involves reason, consistency, and open-mindedness, principles we all inherently value. Whether you subscribe to the concept of God-given logos or our biologically evolved logic, the task is to ensure we apply our rationality and empathy at the appropriate level for each context. Thank you for the fantastic question Peter, I look forward to more comments! 🙏😎
